NYC cop who died on the job overdosed on fentanyl-laced drugs: sources

A Bronx police sergeant who died on the job last month overdosed on a cocktail of drugs, including fentanyl — and was once caught buying drugs across the street from his precinct station house, The Post has learned.

Sgt. Ryan Kenny, 40, who had been on the force for 18 years, was found unresponsive in the third-floor locker room at the 50th Precinct building on Kingsbridge Avenue around 12:20 a.m. Aug. 14.

At the time, police officials believed Kenny had suffered a fatal heart attack, but sources told The Post on Wednesday that the sergeant had died of a drug overdose.

An investigation later uncovered a video of the officer purchasing drugs outside the Kingsbridge precinct, according to a high-ranking department source. It was unclear when he had bought the drugs or what they were.

The source added that Kenny suffered an injury years ago when he worked in Queens and may have developed an opioid addiction.

The NYC’s Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Thursday the officer died of an “acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, diazepam, and tramadol.”

The father of 11-year-old triplets was loved by his fellow officers, according to a GoFundMe set up for his family that has raised more than $31,000 as of Wednesday.

“He was a man known for his humorous character that left all who encountered him with endless stories of the man he was,” the organizer wrote. “Unfortunately, Sergeant Kenny died unexpectedly in the 50th Precinct during his tour.”

Kenny’s wife, Laura, declined to comment when reached by phone.

An NYPD spokeswoman said the “matter was under internal review.”
