MOORHEAD — A Rochester, Minnesota, man who was arrested earlier this week in connection with a fatal shooting in Moorhead on Friday, Sept. 10, is charged in Clay County District Court with one count of second-degree murder.

The charge against Idris Abdillahi Haji-Mohamed, 26, was filed under court seal on Monday, Sept. 13, the day Haji-Mohamed was arrested in Rochester, but the charge and associated court documents have since been made public.

Last Friday at about 8 p.m., police responded to a report of gunshots near 17th Street and 30th Avenue South in south Moorhead. When officers arrived, they found a bystander trying to treat a man who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Attempts to resuscitate the victim, later identified as 32-year-old Abdi Mohamed Abdi, were unsuccessful, according to police.

According to court documents:

Abdi was shot numerous times at point blank range and was dead at the scene.

An investigation revealed that prior to the incident, Abdi was in a vehicle parked at a Casey's General store at 1702 30th Ave. S. when another vehicle dropped off an individual who walked into the store and purchased cigarettes.

Upon leaving the store, the individual who bought cigarettes spoke casually with the occupants of the vehicle Abdi was in before getting into a different vehicle, which began following the vehicle Abdi was in when Abdi's vehicle left the convenience store parking lot.

The vehicle Abdi was in stopped at a nearby apartment complex at 3009 18th St. S., and Abdi got out of the vehicle to smoke a cigarette.

The vehicle that had followed Abdi's vehicle arrived at the same apartment complex and the man authorities believe purchased cigarettes from the Casey's store got out and began chasing Abdi while firing a 9mm handgun at him.

Surveillance video obtained from the apartment complex shows the man chasing Abdi stopping to reload his gun and dropping a magazine in the process.

When the assailant stoops to pick up the magazine, he drops his wallet before continuing to chase Abdi and firing rounds at him.

Video shows Abdi crossing the street to the next block where he ends up on the ground. His assailant is then seen on video firing about five bullets point-blank into Abdi's body, killing him.

Authorities identified Haji-Mohamed as a suspect based on the wallet recovered at the scene and information provided by an employee of the store who identified Haji-Mohamed as the person who purchased cigarettes shortly before the shooting.

During an initial court appearance held Wednesday, bail for Haji-Mohamed was set at $2 million with no conditions, or $1 million with conditions.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Haji-Mohamed was being held in the Clay County Jail.
