Stephen A. Smith continues to be a vocal advocate in favor of getting vaccinated against Covid-19. In recent weeks, Smith even blasted professional athletes for refusing the vaccine, but that doesn’t mean he has no qualms about getting the jab.

“Listen, I have my own damn reservations about the vaccine myself!” Smith admitted Wednesday while joining The Breakfast Club radio show. “I’m a Black man. We know history, in terms of what this nation has done as it pertains to medicine and things of that nature. The Tuskegee Experiment and all of this. We know all of that.”

“Here’s the flip side. You’re an athlete. You’ve been putting stuff in your body,” Smith told hosts Angela Yee, DJ Envy, and Charlamagne tha God. “You trying to tell me that the doctor or team physician prescribes something, that you look at every ingredient and Google it? Stop it. You know good and damn well that’s not the case.”

“We go to the doctor. We ain’t feeling well. The doctor tells us to take something. We look at the prescription. Then, we go, we get it!” Smith continued. “All of a sudden now you want to be like, ‘I want to check.’ Stop, that’s where we look hypocritical.”

Smith acknowledged there are some people who carefully research every ingredient of what they consume, but “in the world of sports that clearly hasn

’t been the case.” While there are plenty of professional athletes who egregiously take substances or banned drugs, there are certainly others who are meticulous about what goes into their body.

The NFL reports nearly 93 percent of its players have been vaccinated. About 85 percent of NBA players have received the jab. Some players have looked foolish in their explanations as to why they have not been vaccinated, but it’s unfair to assume none of them are vigilant about the drugs they take. Some of the remaining unvaccinated players might even have the same “damn reservations” about getting the jab as Smith.
