After a long drawn transfer saga, Celtic finally managed to sign Giorgos Giakoumakis on transfer deadline day. But it looks like it could take a little bit of time before the Greek striker ends up making his debut for the Hoops.

At the moment, Celtic are certainly short of options up top. Both Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths left on deadline day while Kyogo Furuhashi picked up an injury while with the Japan national team which will keep him out for a while.

Thus, Ange Postecoglou could have certainly done with someone like Giakoumakis at this point of time. But he won’t be available for the upcoming game against Real Betis, in what is the Hoops’ Europa League group stage opener.

While speaking at a media conference on Celtic’s official YouTube channel and as reported by 67 Hail Hail, when asked about Giakoumakis’ availability, Postecoglou said:

"“No, not for [Betis], mate. Like I said the other day, he’s just quite not ready there. He’s in the boat with three or four others who we kind of expect to return around the same time. Probably weekend, or midweek next week.“For this game, it’s come too early.”"

Giakoumakis’ availability will be a huge boost for Celtic

It is pretty clear that Giakoumakis is not fit enough to be playing first-team football at the moment. But when he is, it will be a massive boost for Postecoglou’s side.

It is safe to say that the manager does not have a lot of options to pick his striker from at this point of time. Albian Ajeti is the only recognised striker in the squad who is fit at the moment. And while the striker did score a couple of goals last weekend against Ross County, he himself has not played a lot of football in a while.

On the other hand, Giakoumakis is coming off of an incredible season, in which he topped the Eredivisie scoring charts while playing for VVV-Venlo. But his record before the 2020/21 campaign is not great though and thus, it will be interesting to see how he does while playing for Celtic this season.
