(Avoca) For a third time in four weeks the AHSTW football team will hit the road. Friday night the Vikings travel to Mount Ayr for a matchup of 1-2 teams.
AHSTW coach GG Harris says Mount Ayr is physical and athletic with good coaching and good tradition. “They are able to come out offensively in multiple formations and do what they want to do. Defensively they can match up athlete for athlete. They have some good matchups. It really puts you in some predicaments on both sides. Coach Ryan Victor is fitting in down there and on film they look pretty good.”
The Vikings suffered a 14-12 loss to SW Valley last week. Coach Harris is looking for his team to become more consistent. “We just have to get better. We have to execute and find ways to win even though we know we have a long ways to go. We left a lot of plays out there. It was little details. We can’t have six out of eleven guys executing and five not.”
The Vikings have some impressive athletes, but are still exploring the best ways to utilize all of their talent. “That’s still a work in progress. We are finding ways to feature the skill set of our playmakers and get the ball where it needs to get. We know we have some playmakers, but how do we get other kids involved to take some pressure off?”
He says the team is still excited to play and learn and get better, but now with two losses there’s a big sense of urgency.
A couple of the bright spots statically last week came on defense. Kolby Weihs who got his first start of the season and middle linebacker and registered 12 tackles. Blake Tuma was another force on defense with 12.5 tackles.
