EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has confirmed a new love interest for the recently returned Janine Butcher as sparks fly between her and Zack Hudson.

The character made her comeback to Albert Square last week, returning in the guise of Dr Bernstein as she helped real doctor Dr Cole as part of a scam.

Janine has also been clashing with Kat Slater over care plans for Janine's daughter Scarlett and her half-brother Tommy Moon.

In scenes set to air next week on the soap, Janine remembers in the café that it's Scarlett's first day of school, leaving her daughter surprised. While she tries to make amends with Scarlett, the latter is unable to forgive or forget easily.

Kat also encourages Janine to get a legitimate job, but she struggles after being rejected all over Albert Square given her bad reputation and sketchy employment history.

With Janine in a tough situation, Dr Cole tries to entice her to come back to their scam – will she accept?

Meanwhile, at Ruby's, things start to heat up between Janine and Zack, suggesting something deeper could be on the cards.

Speaking previously about her return, star Charlie Brooks told Digital Spy and other media: "With some of the relationships, and some of the old characters that we see her working with, for me I know when it's exciting because I can feel it as an actress.

"I can feel it when two characters are sparking off each other. I'm like, 'This feels so good and so exciting'. So you've got a lot of that to look forward to. With her put downs and her wit, the writers have done a brilliant job so far of writing for her."

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
