LAKE LINDEN — About 30 students are currently quarantined at Lake Linden-Hubbell Public Schools following positive COVID-19 tests among three students last week, Superintendent Brad Codere said Tuesday.

Western Upper Peninsula Health Department Health Officer Kate Beer and Emergency Preparedness Director Pete Baril spoke at Monday’s board meeting regarding the quarantine policy, Codere said. About 10 people attended. One parent spoke, asking the board to stop requiring quarantines, Codere said.

On Friday, the district announced three students — one high school and two elementary — had tested positive for COVID. Symptoms ranged from none to fairly ill, the district said in a Facebook post.

Students who have been deemed a close contact must stay out of the building for seven days, and thereafter can return once they have tested negative. The policy was amended from last year’s 14 days, Codere said.

Codere said the district would keep the quarantine policy in place.

“The district’s going to follow the guidelines of the Health Department, and that’s that,” he said.

Codere said the district continues to leave the decision of whether to wear masks up to each person. Unlike last year, the state does not have a mask mandate in place. About 43% of districts statewide have announced a requirement, with 46% not requiring them and the rest unknown, MLive reported Monday. The exception is buses, where masks are required by the federal government.

“As the board said last night, they’re not medical professionals, and they want to listen and heed the advice of those who are,” Codere said.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the board:

– Set commencement for May 27, 2022.

– Approved hiring Deborah Olson as library aide for the 2021-22 school year.

– Approved hiring Susan Clouthier as food service worker for the 2021-22 school year.

– Approved hiring Cody Kumpula and Coy Budweg as junior high football coach for the 2021-22 school year.

– Approved a proposal from Keweenaw Automation to install a plasma ion generator for $18,442. The generator improves air quality, Codere said.
