Cupra is getting ready to join the crowded fully electric SUV market with the Tavascan, which is expected to hit the market in 2024. While it is too early to talk about its final design, our spy photographers caught an early mule of the model wearing the body of the VW ID.4.

The Tavascan concept was revealed in 2019, with the Tavascan Extreme-E off-road racer following in 2021. Usually, the design of concept cars is significantly toned-down for production, however, if we believe Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths, this won’t be the case with the Tavascan. More specifically, during an interview with Top Gear in early 2021, he said that the production model will be “very, very near to the show car”, referring to the 2019 concept.

We are still early in the development of the Cupra Tavascan so it’s normal for mules to look nothing like the final model. This one is sharing most of the body panels with the VW ID.4, even though the front end is camouflaged. The only differences we can spot are the shape of the intakes on the front bumper. The production version of the Tavascan will most likely have a coupe-style roofline, similar to the upcoming VW ID.5 while integrating sporty design elements from the Cupra range.

We already know that the Cupra Tavascan will be sharing its underpinnings with the VW ID.4 the Skoda Enyaq iV, and the Audi Q4. Like the aforementioned models, it will probably be offered in different variants in terms of battery capacities and power outputs.

Given the brand’s performance-oriented character it will probably use the dual-motor setup producing a combined 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS) in the VW ID.4 GTX which also comes with a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. For the record, the 2019 Tavascan Concept was fitted with dual motors producing 302 hp (225 kW / 306 PS) allowing a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time of 6.5 seconds.

We will have more information on the Cupra Tavascan as we get closer to its reveal. Until then, we will probably see more camouflaged prototypes wearing production bodies. The Tavascan will join the Born compact hatchback, the production version of the Urban Rebel small EV, and the upcoming baby crossover in Cupra’s rapidly expanding fully electric range.
