SPARTA, MICH. -- A quintessential fall festival returns this weekend, ready to crown a winner for best apple pie in Michigan.

The apple pie baking contest is just one of many seasonally classic events scheduled for this year’s Apple Fest, which will take place Friday, Sept. 17 and Saturday, Sept. 18 in downtown Sparta, Mich.

The two-day outdoor festival celebrates the region’s rich agricultural heritage, and its proximity to “The Ridge” -- a prime fruit-growing region responsible for more than half of Michigan’s apple production.

This year’s festival includes family-friendly activities like kids games and crafts, a 100-artisan boutique vendor show, a beverage garden with hard apple ciders, apple wines, apple specialty cocktails and slushies, and contests for apple cider tasting, apple peeling, apple pie eating for both kids and adults, and, of course, the bake-off for best-tasting apple pie, among many more.

More information and a full schedule of events is at michiganapplefest.com and facebook.com/MichiganAppleFest.
