Man Utd have lost more Champions League games than ANY other Prem club but still boast second-best win ratio

MANCHESTER UNITED have lost more Champions League games than ANY other Premier League club who have competed in the competition.

The Red Devils have lost a whopping 54 CL matches, with their latest coming on Tuesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were hoping for a convincing win over Young Boys and Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the first half, his third goal in just two games of his second spell at Old Trafford.

However, disaster struck in the 35th minute when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off for a late tackle, then Young Boys found an equaliser in the second half with Moumi Ngamaleu getting the goal.

Second-half substitute Jesse Lingard then threw a valuable point away for United right at the death, playing Theoson Siebatcheu through for the winner.

That gave Man Utd the dubious record of losing the most Champions League matches of any Prem club.

Despite this, the Red Devils also have the second best win ratio.

They have won 121 Champions League games out of 231 games played, boasting an impressive win ratio of 52.3 per cent.

Neighbours Manchester City have the best win ratio out of all Prem clubs in the Champions League.

City have played 90 games, won 49, drawn 16 and lost 25 - giving them a win ratio of 54.4 per cent.

They reached last year's final, but lost to fellow Premier League outfit Chelsea 1-0 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Blues also boast a rather impressive record.

They have played a whopping 178 games, winning 90 of those and only losing 38.

Not to mention they've scored 302 goals in the competition, 87 shy of United's goal tally in 53 less games.

And they have two Champions Leagues to show for it.

Boss Thomas Tuchel, however, has played down claims of Chelsea being one of the favourites to win the competition this year.

The Blues kicked off their title defence with a 1-0 win at home against Zenit on Tuesday.

The Reds have only played 132 games in the Champions League, winning 65 of those.

Their win percentage (49.2 per cent) is slightly lower than their fellow English Champions League winners.

The Reds' most recent European triumph came in 2019 when they beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid.

Legendary Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has a theory as to why Liverpool have done so well in Europe down the years, compared to their 30 league title drought.

Wenger told beIN Sport: "In Europe they do well. Why? Anfield.

"The atmosphere - everything - is special there."

Liverpool start their Champions League campaign against historic rivals AC Milan on Wednesday night.

Arsenal have a rich history in terms of games played in the Champions League, but don't have a trophy to show for it.

The Gunners boast a win percentage of 46 per cent in the competition.

And that's unlikely to change any time soon with Arsenal struggling to finish inside the top four in recent years.

Their best shot at winning one of the biggest prizes in world football came back in 2006, but they were beaten by a star-studded Barcelona.

Tottenham, Newcastle, Leeds, Blackburn and Leicester make up the rest of the Prem teams who have competed in the Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino came close to European glory with Spurs back in 2019, but lost to the Kop.

Leicester also had a memorable run in the 2016/17 season, reaching the quarter-finals the season after their sensational underdog story which saw then win the Premier League under Claudio Ranieri.

Leeds famously beat Milan in 2000, while Newcastle's finest hour came when Faustino Asprilla scored a hat-trick in a 1997 win over Barcelona.
