Big Al Anderson plays the Kate

    Big Al Anderson (bigalanderson.com)

Big Al Anderson is one of those solo musicians who will forever be associated with the band he was in — sorta like Morrissey with the Smiths or Peter Tork with the Monkees. In Anderson's case, he left NRBQ in 1993 and has achieved songwriting success far beyond his former group's cult-adoration status.

And yet, Anderson is massively successful in Nashville. Some of the artists who've covered his songs since he went on his own include the Allman Brothers, Vince Gill, Bonnie Raitt, Trisha Yearwood, Jimmy Buffett, Martina McBride, Patty Loveless, George Jones, Sheryl Crow, Leann Rimes, Tim McGraw, George Strait, Rascall Flatts, Zac Brown, Anthony Hamilton, Harry Connick Jr. and ... you get the idea.

Anderson continues to tour with his own band, the Floor Models, and they'll perform Wednesday and Sept. 17 at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. You can anticipate a cross-section of his illimitable life's work.

Big Al Anderson & the Floor Models, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Sept 17, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $55; thekate.org, (860) 510-0453.
