West Side Story is based on the Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents Broadway musical of the same name, which was previously adapted as a 1961 movie starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer.

The trailer for the new film shows Maria (Zegler) and Tony (Elgort) fall in love in 1950s New York City despite racial tensions and links to rival street gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Zegler performs the song "Tonight" as Maria.

West Side Story is written by Tony Kushner and directed by Steven Spielberg. The film co-stars Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Josh Andrés Rivera, Corey Stoll, Brian d'Arcy James and Rita Moreno.

20th Century previously shared a special look teaser for the movie in July. The studio released a first teaser trailer in April.

West Side Story opens in theaters Dec. 10.
