The Richland Springs Report

Not much rain around town the last few days. I’m glad the hail that fell further west of us didn’t make it here. I heard there was two to three inches of hail on the ground. That would have killed quite a few gardens in this area. Jason Lewis still has bunches of squash in a basket outside his fence.

I was feeling so proud of myself last week. I ordered a cargo box for Russ’s golf cart, (it’s really mine). I thought it would be a handy thing to have for his tools. Little did I realize that there are many kinds of carts and many different mountings for those things.

Naturally, I bought the wrong one. When I called the company, they told me to send it back at my cost and reorder, but the mounting I wanted was not available. Fortunately, I called Golf Mart in Brownwood, and they helped me. Vic, I presume the manager, called around and found a universal mounting kit for me. Thank you, Vic, for saving the day and giving me excellent customer service.

I’m gathering my materials and tools for the ladies quilting retreat at the end of the week. It’s amazing how much junk we need to take with us for a three-day retreat. I guarantee my trunk will be full. Just hauling that stuff around gives you a good gym workout. I do love to go to our Stonewall retreat. Kay Huffine and her daughter are such excellent hosts. Did I tell you they are also excellent cooks? Our evening meals are culinary delights. My sewing house is tidied up and the material labeled and put up, so it makes working in my grubby little house a little better. Russ says I’m unusual. I guess that is true. I love going to that hundred-year-old decrepit house with its old house smells and working. I just feel good knowing there are years of happy memories all around me. It still smells, I have bugs visiting and the roof leaks, but it’s wonderful.

I spoke with my sisters last night. I’m trying to figure out the best time to visit. My brother is not well, but my sister Bev says he is not in any danger of passing away. That removes some of the pressure. I won’t go in June because the water at the lake is still way to cold for this Texas lady. I may go late August or in October for the Canadian Thanksgiving. I’m headed to Florida in February for a short cruise and most likely I will go to Costa Rica before summer is out.

I’ve been helping Chrissy clean out Annie Granados’s house and barn. It has been a chore to say the least. I was pleased to see the property next door is being cleaned up as well. It will make the drive into town much nicer. There is still quite a bit of work to be done, but it’s getting there. I’m pulling extra duty this week because I dropped a board on Chrissy’s toes, and she is not walking well right now. She is one tough lady. They called her boot when she was little because she was “as tuff as an old boot.”

There’s not much school news, but sports are still going. Foster Locker came to church Sunday carrying this hunker big ring- the prize for winning the Brady baseball tournament. Congratulations to Coach Nick Taylor and the entire team for winning the Brady Tournament. Their championship win was against San Saba with a score of 13 to 5. Way to go for all involved.

Prayers are needed for Jeremy Young. He was admitted to MD Anderson, but things are not going well for him. Please keep the entire family, especially Jeremy, in your prayers. We have multiple family losses in the area. Their pain will last for quite some time. Please keep grieving families in your thoughts and prayers. Our country is in turmoil, and we need strong leadership to keep us on the right path.

God is still in control, and although He may be wondering what in the world we are doing, He has the answers when we are ready to hear them.

God bless America and keep us strong. Most of all, pray for our precious troops and their families.
