The Crown star's new Netflix movie lands 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Netflix's The Lost Daughter, starring Fifty Shades' Dakota Johnson and The Crown's Olivia Colman and written, directed and produced by Maggie Gyllenhaal, has earned itself a rare 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Adapted from novel of the same name, the film – which is set to premiere on the streaming service on December 31 – centres on Leda (Colman), a divorced English teacher who becomes transfixed on a young mother and her child one day after spotting them on the beach during her solitary seaside holiday in Greece.

Having initially observed their relationship from afar, Leda suddenly finds herself being approached by Nina (Johnson), the woman, and her raucous extended family, which threatens to bring back overwhelming memories of her own experiences with parenthood.

When a seemingly meaningless event occurs, Leda is shocked into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she's tasked with facing certain choices she made all those years ago, as well as the consequences that came about because of them.

Westworld's Ed Harris (as Kyle), Normal People's Paul Mescal (as Will), The Batman's Peter Sarsgaard (as Professor Hardy), The Haunting of Bly Manor's Oliver Jackson-Cohen (as Toni) and Fargo's Jessie Buckley, who plays a younger Leda, round out the star-studded cast of the Gyllenhaal flick.

"It may not all add up but this is an ambitious and taboo-tackling first feature with an atmosphere that lingers thanks to gutsy performances from Colman and Buckley," Little White Lies critic Sophie Monks Kaufman wrote in her review.

"[Maggie] Gyllenhaal's eye is extraordinarily perceptive, the camera almost indecently intimate in its attention to the heady sensuality of frustrated desire," The Skinny's Anahit Behrooz said in another five-star appraisal.

IndieWire's Jessica Kiang wrote: "Gyllenhaal has, with a blazing certainty that seems borderline miraculous in a first-time filmmaker, engineered The Lost Daughter to work, so that even though very little actually happens, the way that things don’t happen is somehow an ongoing, gripping surprise."

The Lost Daughter will be released on Netflix on Friday, December 31.
