Back in January Netflix revealed the first teaser trailer for the new film, and it, er, admittedly didn't give *much* away. In it, we see a brooding Idris Elba looking straight into the camera, before the release date pops up, and the actual name of the film: Luther: The Fallen Sun.

In November 2022, we got our first glimpse of Idris Elba back in action. Empire magazine shared an exclusive first look at the movie, which showed the detective swapping England's capital city for the, er, icy terrain.

"WORLD-EXCLUSIVE 🚨 The Luther movie will "break out of the gritty streets of London," Idris Elba tells Empire. Get your first details about the long-awaited Luther movie, link in bio and stories," the caption read.

He added in the interview, "And that’s great. It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the Luther experience."

When was the Luther film announced?

On 14 September 2021, Netflix took to their official Twitter account to casually share the news. In the announcement, they wrote, "Luther is coming back! Idris Elba will reprise his iconic role — joined by Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis — in a new feature film written by series creator Neil Cross."

Yay!

Who will star in the Luther film?

As Netflix revealed, Cynthia Erivo from Harriet and Chaos Walking will be joining the movie, as well as Andy Serkis, who you'll recognise from Planet Of The Apes and Venom.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Luther will tackle two new villains in the movie, played by the pair: "[He] will have to contend with a double threat. Erivo is playing a detective who is also Luther’s nemesis while Serkis is the story’s criminal villain."

What has Idris Elba said about the Luther film?

The actor has always championed the idea of a Luther film, telling BAFTA in 2020, "I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards. I'm looking forward to making that happen.

"With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale."
