Kim Kardashian's 2021 Met Gala outfit - the look that spawned a thousand memes. Of course, it's not totally surprising that Twitter had a field day with endless Harry Potter and Sims comparisons given how unexpected her Balenciaga bodysuit was. In fact, as someone who has proven countless times that she knows how to make a memorable red carpet arrival, it's entirely likely that Kim intended to cause a stir with her divisive look (this ain't her first rodeo, folks).
In addition to the hilarious pop culture references, though, some were quick to question whether Kim's outfit was actually in keeping with the Met's 2021 theme, 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion':
"'so the theme is american lexicon' kim kardashian : 'cool so come dressed as a dementor?' #MetGala"
"'In America' was the theme of the met gala. Am I the only one who didn't get what Kim Kardashian was saying with that dress/outfit?"
"Would really like to know @KimKardashian and teams reference points for this look… doesn’t exactly scream ‘American Independence’ (the theme this year) #MetGala"
Others, however, argued that Kim's look was actually very relevant:
"Kim Kardashian in Balenciaga. So fitting with the theme which was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion'. Kim herself is the epitome of American culture; famous for being famous. She didn't have to wear 'anything' because she is recognisable no matter what. Very clever #MetGala"
"idc what anyone says; kim kardashian was the only one who really understood this years met gala theme of American Independence!!"
"Actually the more I think about it the more Kim Kardashian's Met Gala look seems in line with the theme."
And, like that, I'm getting flashbacks to that high school art gallery trip where people debated (with varying shades of enthusiasm) what is and isn't 'art'.
Anywhoo, safe to say, Kim's look definitely started a conversation and now the Kardashian has gone and responded to the critics directly, contending that her look was actually super relevant, thank you very much.
Overnight, Kim took to Instagram to share more pics and behind-the-scenes footage of her polarising outfit with the tongue-in-cheek caption, "What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!"
Ah Kim, never change, yeah?
