From Power Stone to Apex Legends, multiplayer games live and die by their cast of unique characters. With a franchise like Star Wars, there is a whole universe full of wonderful characters, with nine more worthy additions coming soon.

Not many details were revealed when Star Wars: Hunters was initially announced during the February Nintendo Direct. Not much was known about the game until its recent showing during the 2021 Apple Event that also unveiled the iPhone 13.

For the uninitiated, Star Wars: Hunters is a free-to-play competitive arena combat game for the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices releasing sometime in 2021. The game will bring players together to engage in thrilling, 4v4 squad-based multiplayer battles.

Star Wars: Hunters connects players in real time to battle in areas inspired by iconic Star Wars locales. The game will also take place after the events of Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi.

The official website of the game has since been updated, giving us a proper look at each playable character and some information about each of them.

First we have Rieve, who appears to be a female Sith of sorts. The website states that she is a shrewd warrior of the Dark Side who seeks to wreak havoc in the arena. The short gameplay clips shown during the Apple Event give us a glimpse of her abilities, which include lightsaber swings and throwing her lightsaber at enemies.

Next we have Imara Vex, a mysterious bounty hunter who is always on the hunt. Vex has a chip on their helmet, a customised blaster, and a shoulder-mounted weapon. Vex also does not appear in the cinematic trailer for the game.

For those looking to play a sort of Han Solo-like character, there’s Zaina who is described as the ‘veteran of the Rebel Alliance and hero to the New Republic’. She seems to be quick on the draw and has robotic legs.

Wookies will always have a place in our hearts and the berzerker-like warrior in the roster, Grozz, seems to be the perfect fuzzball to go on a rampage with. Armed with two clubs, he definitely seems to be the game’s primary tank.

It wouldn’t be a Star Wars game without a Mandalorian flying around, so in Star Wars: Hunters we have an unnamed member of this warrior clan. Maybe this Mandalorian will be revealed as Din Djarin or something, but for now, we know that this Mando has twin blasters, a jetpack, and a flamethrower.

Just like in The Mandalorian, there are still Imperialists looking to bring back the glory days of the Empire, and in this game we have Sentinel filling that role. Armed with a massive minigun and wearing a cracked Stromtrooper helmet, he won’t stop until Palpatine somehow returns.

From here on out, we have a colourful cast of pretty kooky characters to play as. Sling Shot, a tiny little Ugnaught who goes into battle riding in a Droideka, is able to roll around at high speeds and mow down enemies with lasers.

There’s Utooni, a pair of Jawa scavengers who stack on top of each other to pass off as a much taller, singular Jawa. Either way, they seem formidable and might just hide some deadly surprises.

Finally, there’s J-3DI, a droid who seems to think that he wields the powers of the Force. This is definitely a first for the franchise as the closest thing we had to an android Force-wielder was Darth Vader.

Here’s hoping that this game launches soon and we get to see more of this colourful and quirky side to a galaxy far far away.

Star Wars: Hunters will be available free to download for the Nintendo Switch, on the App Store and on Google Play. A Nintendo Switch Online membership will not be required to download and play this game.
