Police arrest 18 for DUI

During the week of Sept. 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Kohala, six; Puna, five; Kona, four; and South Hilo, three.

So far this year, there have been 757 DUI arrests compared to 652 during the same period last year, an increase of 16.1%.

There have been 552 major accidents so far this year compared to 534 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.4%.

To date, there have been 16 official traffic fatalities compared to 13 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 23.1%

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
