Health Coverage Holds Steady Despite Drop in Employer Insurance

The percentage of Americans without health insurance stayed essentially the same at 8.6% in 2020, but private insurance covered dropped by 0.8%, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The percentage of people with health coverage for some or all of 2020 was 91.4%.

The number of people who didn’t have health insurance numbered about 28 million people in 2020, Sharon Stern, assistant division chief of the employment characteristics branch in the U.S. Census Bureau’s social, economics, and housing statistics division, said in a press call. That wasn’t statistically changed from 2018, she said.
