Letters to the editor: We should not pay benefits to people who prefer not to work

Akron Beacon Journal

Importance of work, dining options

We attempted to go out for lunch on Saturday. First stop was a local family restaurant — now not open as they cannot get enough help. Next stop was Pizza Hut, advertised out front as “Dining Room Open”  — but the door was locked. A pleasant fellow came to the door, apologized and said they were doing delivery only because the servers were not coming to work. It is a common problem for employers today, as workers can make more money by staying home than fulfilling their obligations to employers and customers and coming to work.

If you are able to work, please find a job and avoid the government dependency trap. The circle of higher taxes to fund the ever-higher government spending to pay people extra benefits not to work causes businesses to shutter and the economy to slow. On the surface, it may look like a good financial decision not to work, but getting a job will provide a benefit structure, some savings, new skills, social interaction, a career path and the dignity of work.

Many jobs go unfilled while the government encourages people not to work. So, if you are able, please get a job, pay your rent and enjoy the fruits of your labor — we need you.

Concertgoers urge safety measures

We attended the Brit Floyd show Aug. 31 at the Civic Theatre. We always look forward to seeing them. We were disappointed in the lack of safety despite the ongoing coronavirus. The Bowery Street entrance was not available to enter, so everyone had to walk down to the main entrance on Main Street. All that did was cram hundreds of people in the main entrance, and they did not enforce mask wearing or check vaccination cards.

We love the Civic but hope other concerts are handled much better next time.
