OAKLAND — A multi-vehicle collision claimed at least one person’s life Tuesday night and led to the closure of Interstate 580 for more than an hour, authorities said.

Shortly after 9 p.m., CHP officers received reports of a collision on I-580 near the Dutton Avenue off-ramp. The crash sent one vehicle into the center divider and another vehicle into the slow lane.

At least half a dozen other vehicles approaching the scene either struck one or the other vehicle, suffering damage from driving over debris from the original collision before managing to pull off the highway.

Oakland Fire Department firefighters also responded to the scene alongside paramedics, finding at least one overturned vehicle and providing care to several injured people, CHP Officer Damian Cistaro said.

One person was taken to a hospital but pronounced dead en route, Cistaro said. That person’s identity was not immediately released.

No preliminary information was available about any collision factors. Anyone who saw the collision should call CHP Oakland at 510-450-3821 or 800-TELL-CHP.
