Although it's only a piece of paper, your vaccine card is very important, and it can be a burden to replace.
Hy-Vee's vice president of communications, Christina Gayman, said some people are requesting replacement cards to travel.
"We did seem some requests come through with questions coming into our pharmacy saying mid-summer as people were considering going on a vacation, traveling, flying or maybe going out of country if they could go to another country that was accepting other people coming in," Gayman said.
But Gayman explained, you can only get a replacement card at the pharmacy if you got your shot there.
"For Hy-Vee specifically, we can only issue a duplicate COVID vaccine card if they received their COVID vaccine at Hy-Vee0," said Gayman.
Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said that's the case for all vaccine clinics and pharmacies. You can only get a replacement card at the location you received your vaccine. DHHS said you can also go online to Nebraska's State Immunization Information System, but you will have to give your social security number to get access to your records.
If you live in Douglas County you can go to Douglascountyhealth.com and fill out a vaccination replacement card form.
Nebraska state health officials said they do not have plans for electronic vaccine cards, but they are working on making it easier for people to access their COVID-19 vaccine records.
Gayman and DHHS said the best plan of action is to keep your current vaccine card safe. Gayman recommends storing it in a fireproof box or a lockbox.
"We go through a process where we try to explain to the client, or the patient, kind of the importance how to safeguard that vaccine card and make sure to ask them so they understand that it's an important document for them to keep and have them start to think of where they're going to put it, keep it so they don't lose it again," Gayman said.
