Genealogist finds evidence showing Biden ancestors owned slaves

.

Genealogist Alexander Bannerman found evidence that a pair of President Joe Biden’s ancestors owned slaves on his father’s side during the 19th century.

The discovery will be published in Bannerman’s book, The Bidens: Inside the First Family’s Fifty-Year Rise to Power, according to Politico.

Biden’s great-great-great-grandfather, Jesse Robinett, was found to have owned two slaves in Maryland, according to the 1800 census, Bennerman found in his research.

Another Biden great-great-great-grandfather, Thomas Randle, enslaved a 14-year-old, according to the census records and other documents in the mid-1800s.

Bannerman stressed Biden’s family history in the United States goes back to the colonial period, and his family’s ties to slavery are relatively small.

“Not a lot of ancestors, and not a lot of slaves,” Bannerman said. His book will release on Sept 21.

Biden isn’t the only high-ranking politician whose family owned slaves.

Former President Barack Obama, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke all have ancestors who owned slaves, Business Insider reported.

“We all need to know our own story as it relates to the national story, much as I am learning mine,” O’Rourke wrote of his family history. “It is only then, I believe, that we can take the necessary steps to repair the damage done and stop visiting this injustice on the generations that follow ours.”
