A number of county clerks are raising security concerns over an email sent by former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, who is leading an investigation into the 2020 presidential election.
Gableman was hired by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos to do so.
The letter sent Monday requested clerks keep records related to the 2020 election.
It was sent by a private Gmail account with the name 'john delta' and also signed by Gableman.
"That violates every security protocol," Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell said. "There's no excuse for the fact he's not behind the state firewall."
Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson said the e-mail first went to the county's junk folder.
"It was just odd," he said. "To me, it seems haphazard and unprofessional. From a Gmail account for a state investigation, it just seems odd to me."
Gableman's review, which has been authorized to spend up to $680,000 in taxpayer funds, is being watched nationally with implications for Republicans.
Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel addressed the risk some Republicans may not show up in a WISN 12 interview.
"This is why we need to do these reviews and these audits," she said. "We want to make sure voters have faith in the process."
Gableman did not respond to a request for comment about the name or e-mail account.
His review is expected to be complete sometime this fall.
