‘Maid’: Margaret Qualley Strives for Something Better in Netflix’s Emotional New Drama Trailer

Margaret Qualley is struggling to create a better life for her daughter in the new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming limited series Maid, which will be available to stream on Friday, Oct. 1.

In a 10-episode binge, viewers will get to know Alex (Qualley), a single mother who recently escaped an abusive relationship with her young daughter Maddy (Rylea Nevaeh Whittet). The series, which is based off of author Stephanie Land’s memoir, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive, will see Alex determined to get them both off the streets.

The trailer opens with short glimpses of the life Alex left behind, with shots of a hole-punched wall and abusive boyfriend Sean (Nick Robinson) angrily stalking after her car as she drives away. Soon after, Alex takes refuge at a domestic violence shelter, trying to piece her life together, and she gets hired to clean houses. The job isn’t easy, but Alex refuses to give up. “I live for my daughter,” her voice-over states.

Addtional struggles include Alex’s M.I.A. mother who is grappling with bipolar disorder, played by Qualley’s real-life mother Andie MacDowell, and Sean trying to get back into Alex’s good graces. Eventually the two battle for custody of their daughter, and in a gut-wrenching shot, Sean leaves the courtroom with Maddy in his arms. But Alex won’t go down with out a fight: “You will never ever control me again,” she tells her ex assuredly.

The trailer ends with some adorable clips of Alex and Maddy, as Alex narrates that she doesn’t need a lot of things in her and her daughter’s ideal home. As long as they love each other in it, it’s enough.
