The Portland Trail Blazers have expanded Chauncey Billups’ staff to include former Houston Rockets assistant coach Matt Brase, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Brase served with the Rockets under Mike D’Antoni between 2018 and 2020, as well as the team’s Director of Operations between 2013 and 2015. The 39-year-old also coached Houston’s G League affiliate the Rio Grand Valley Vipers from 2015 until 2018 and was also an assistant during the team’s then D-League championship in 2013.

Brase has spent time as an assistant coach with the University of Arizona and Grand Canyon University.

He joins Billups, Scott Brooks, Roy Rogers, Steve Hetzel, Edneisha Curry and Milt Palacio on the Portland bench, which also includes Parker Hines as video coordinator.

Brase reportedly interviewed for the vacant University of Arizona Head Coaching role, which eventually went to Tommy Lloyd earlier this year. He is the grandson of the late Arizona coaching legend Lute Olson.
