Norm Macdonald died after a nine-year private battle with cancer.

The comedian's management firm confirmed his death to Deadline, and revealed the SNL star was fighting cancer for almost a decade.

They did not specify what type of cancer the comedian had.

Macdonald’s producing partner Lori Jo Hoekstra was with him when he died. She said: “He was most proud of his comedy."

“He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. 

“He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”

Who was Norm Macdonald?

Norm Macdonald was a comedian who starred in a number of hit films and television shows.

He was Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update anchor for three seasons. He starred on the sketch comedy show from 1993 till 1998.

Before Saturday Night Live, Macdonald was a writer for the hit show, Roseanne.

Norm Macdonald married Connie Vaillancourt in 1988.

The two separated in April 1999 but had a son, Dylan, born in 1993.

It is unclear why the two separated.

Comedian and actor Seth Rogen wrote he was a "huge fan" of Macdonald and "essentially ripped off his delivery when I first started acting."

"I would stay up specifically to watch him on talk shows," Rogen wrote.

"He was the funniest guest of all time. We lost a comedy giant today. One of the all time great. RIP," he concluded.
