It took a freak accident to fell the Tigers' most durable reliever.
The club placed right-hander Jose Cisnero on the 10-day injured list Tuesday after he slipped down a flight of stairs at his home and needed eight stitches on his wounded right elbow.
A.J. said the incident happened on Monday's off-day.
"He slid down a couple steps, put his elbow down and it split open on the outside of his elbow," Hinch said. "Eight stitches. The before and after pictures were both awful."
Cisnero leads the Tigers and ranks fifth in the majors with 67 appearances this season. He's been a key cog in the back of Detroit's bullpen with a 3.65 ERA and a strikeout per inning.
Hinch, who got word about the incident on Monday from pitching coach Chris Fetter, said Cisnero was "doing better" a day later while still "in some obvious pain."
"He can’t really do much for the next few days," said Hinch. "Not a text you like getting on an off-day, and certainly not with Jose who’s done such a great job this year in the backend. So it’ll be at least 10 days. We’ll see what that leaves for the last week of the season."
The Tigers have 18 games remaining, starting Tuesday night against the Brewers. The club called up right-hander Jason Foley to take Cisnero's place in the bullpen.
