MSOC Drops 1-0 Match to Wisconsin in Double OT

MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University men's soccer team (3-3-0) fell to Wisconsin (2-2-2) 1-0 in double overtime on Monday night in the squad's final installment of non-conference action.

After over 107 minutes of deadlock, the Badgers put home the golden goal in the 108th minute to secure the victory at Valley Fields.

"
This is one of these games where you do 98 percent of the work, and then the final two percent we just couldn't get done," said MU head coach Louis Bennett. "That's really disappointing, especially against an in-state rival. It wouldn't be right to say that we were the better team, but we had a lot of the ball and in the final third we just didn't take advantage of the chances that we had."

Defense was a common theme on both sides early on, as neither team was able to record a shot until redshirt sophomore defender Alex Mirsberger broke the stalemate in the 27th minute. Marquette out-shot the Badgers 2-1 through the first 45 minutes of play, and redshirt junior goalkeeper Chandler Hallwood made the save on the lone Wisconsin attempt.

The Golden Eagles had a pair of opportunities shortly following the break, as midfielder Zyan Andrade struck the left post in the 51st minute and forward AJ Franklin's shot in the 55th minute sailed just over the crossbar. MU went on to finish with four shots in the half, while Wisconsin had 10.

"In the final third of their field, if we had been just inches better, we would have won the game," Bennett said. "We hit the bar, and we could have finished it in the 101st minute when we broke away and we had a 3-on-2 break. I think it was within our grasp to win the game."

Hallwood played the entirety of the match and recorded four saves. Marquette had nine shots on the night, one of which came on goal.

UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will begin conference play on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. CT when the Villanova Wildcats (4-1-0) make their way to Valley Fields.
