BLACKSBURG, Va. (WRIC/WFXR) — Three Virginia universities — including Virginia Tech — made the nation’s top 100 schools this year, according to U.S. News and World Report’s “Best National Universities” ranking.
The University of Virginia ranked the best overall in the state and 25th nationally, followed by the College of William & Mary at 38th and Virginia Tech at 75th.
Meanwhile, in undergraduate teaching, William & Mary was ranked ninth nationally, beating out UVA and George Mason University, which were tied at 71st place.
In addition, several other Virginia higher learning institutes were included in the regional rankings:
- “Best Regional Colleges in the South” (125 schools)
- Averett University tied for 21st
- Ferrum College tied for 55th
- “Best Regional Universities in the South” (138 schools)
- James Madison University ranked as third
- Christopher Newport University tied for sixth
- Longwood University tied for 19th
- University of Mary Washington tied for 19th
- University of Lynchburg tied for 21st
- Radford University tied for 29th
- Eastern Mennonite University tied for 35th
- Marymount University tied for 38th
- Norfolk State University tied for 70th
- Virginia State University tied for 84th
Virginia is somewhat unusual because unlike many other states with outstanding higher education, all of Virginia’s top schools are public universities, which means tuition is significantly more affordable for in-state students.
