DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have placed veteran right-handed reliever Jose Cisnero on the 10-day injured list with a right elbow laceration.

Rookie right-hander Jason Foley was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to replace him.

Cisnero, 32, had been one of the Tigers’ most reliable relievers in 2021 but struggled mightily in his last two outings, seeing his ERA balloon from 2.67 to 3.65.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Cisnero was in his residence during Monday’s off day when he slipped down a couple stairs, using his elbow to brace his fall.

The laceration needed eight stitches to close up.

“He’s in some pain, and he can’t really do much for the next few days,” Hinch said.

With only two-and-a-half weeks left in the season, it’s possible that Cisnero has thrown his last pitch.

Cisnero has struck out 62 and walked 31 in 61 2/3 innings this year and has pitched most frequently in the seventh and eighth innings as part of the Tigers’ upper-tier of late-inning relievers.

“He’s done such a great job this year,” Hinch said.

Foley, 25, is in his third stint with the Tigers this year. He made his Major League debut in June and has posted a 2.84 ERA in 6 1/3 innings at the big-league level.
