The first set of Champions League games have wrapped up with 16 goals across the eight games. In the night's most prestigious matchup Bayern Munich emerged comfortable victors from the Camp Nou where goals from Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski, twice, did not adequately reflect the comfortable nature of their 3-0 win over Barcelona. Reigning champions Chelsea were made to work hard for their 1-0 win over Zenit Saint Petersburg but Romelu Lukaku delivered when they needed him most.
Perhaps the most dramatic games came earlier in the day with Sevilla and Red Bull Salzburg sharing four penalties in a 1-1 draw. The Austrian champions missed two of their trio of shots from 12 yards out and failed to kill off a game where their hosts spent much of the second half a man down when Youssef En-Nesyri dived in an attempt to win a fifth spot kick.
Meanwhile Manchester United suffered what may well be the biggest shock of matchday one, losing 2-1 to Young Boys in Bern. Cristiano Ronaldo had given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side the lead in the first half but Aaron Wan-Bissaka's red card changed the course of a game where second half goals from Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu and US international Jordan Pefok, pouncing on an error from Jesse Lingard, earned the Swiss champions a famous win.
There was plenty of entertainment to be found at the Madrigal too as Villarreal and Atalanta split the points in an excellent 2-2 draw, Robin Gosens earning the Italian visitors a crucial point to start their Champions League campaign.
Meanwhile In Sweden Juventus had their game against Malmo won by half time as they cruised to a 3-0 victory whilst Lille vs. Wolfsburg and Dynamo Kyiv vs. Benfica both ended goalless, Mykola Shaparenko seeing his goal ruled out for offside in the last minute.

Match of the day
Villarreal 2, Atalanta 2: While Sevilla vs. Salzburg was a wild one, the most exciting, competitive one was what occurred at El Madrigal. A back-and-forth showdown between two technical teams did not disappoint, though both will feel like the three points were they for the taking. The game featured four goals, both teams teams blowing a lead, 27 total shots and 11 on frame. Villarreal managed to storm back, recovering from Remo Freuler's goal in the sixth minute to take a lead through Arnaut Danjuma, but it wasn't meant to be.
Robin Gosens' 83rd-minute strike from close earned the upbeat Italians a point on the road, with the hosts having to hold on after Francis Coquelin was shown red just six minutes from time.
Go ahead and mark it on your calendar now -- they meet against on Dec. 8 in Italy.
Top performer
Robert Lewandowski: How could it not be? Nobody came close to his type of production. The legend scored his 74th and 75th Champions League goals, demolishing the Nou Camp in a variety of ways. He showed attentiveness on the first goal and then just an ability to once again handle a rebound before making Oscar Mingueza look silly in the process. Take a look:
The race for top scorer is going to be something, but advantage Lewa for now.
Goal of the day
I will reluctantly give it to Alvaro Morata of Juventus. While his team won 3-0 at Malmo with the Spanish striker getting the third, it was a goal that was filled with luck yet looked great. The former Chelsea man pounced on a ball in the box, lifted it over the goalkeeper and put it upper 90. Now, when you look closely, the ball hits the ankle area and takes a fortunate turn towards the upper corner.
He could have 100 tries to replicate that, and my money is on it not happening. There was a lot of fortune in it, but it ended up being a great goal visually, and he'll act like he meant it.
Silver medal goal
Former Bournemouth man Arnaut Danjuma made quite the impression off the bench for Villarreal, putting his team ahead in the second half with a lovely goal, and the second best of the day. He was able to slice the effort into the bottom right corner with a ton of agility. Take a look:

Most surprising result
Young Boys 2, Manchester United 1: No result comes close. Manchester United were ran off the field in what was a dominant display by the hosts thanks to the self-inflicted wounds of the Red Devils. Young Boys had 19 shots to United's two, won the battle of possession, completed 86 percent of their passes and earned arguably the biggest win in club history, with American Jordan Pefok playing the role of hero:
Team that disappointed the most
Manchester United: That was shockingly bad. And, it's not just because they went down to 10 men. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves some serious criticism as of result, because they played not to lose and they played scared. If they were to have any chance to win this one, then you don't take off both Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.
The team finished with an xG of 0.49 which came via Ronaldo's two shots. No player did anything else going forward. Not one player created a chance outside of Ronaldo's two shots, and they were deservedly beaten by a team that wanted it more. Of course, it's also made easier when you serve up the winning goal on a silver platter like they did. Just a nightmare in Switzerland. So much for Manchester United being back.
The second-half hero
Chelsea weren't thoroughly convincing in their first UCL match since winning the title last season, but they did enough against a gritty Zenit team. It took nearly 70 minutes, but Romelu Lukaku scored for the third time in four games since rejoining the club before the season:
Big Rom finished with four shots, but only one went on frame, and it was the one that mattered. His beautiful header on that Cesar Azpilicueta cross continues the hot streak for Chelsea ahead of Sunday's big clash with Tottenham.
