I hate to say I warned you about the Mariners and one-run games yesterday, but since the Red Sox dropped the series opener 5-4 early Tuesday morning, you were warned.

Costly errors by Hunter Renfroe and Kyle Schwarber made the difference last night, but offensively, the Sox could not get anything going. They were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Seattle rookie Logan Gilbert, who made his debut in mid-May, looked like a star, going six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, and striking out nine. He issued the only walk the Sox would get all game.

The only true bright spots were a pair of back-to-back homers by Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers. Hopefully, tonight is better.

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Nathan Eovaldi

Newest Roberto Clemente Award nominee Nathan Eovaldi is on the bump late tonight in Seattle. The star of the Sox rotation has a 3.57 ERA over 28 starts this year, but has been especially Nasty lately.

His most recent start was a scoreless seven-inning gem in which he allowed three hits and two walks. Since his seven-earned run fiasco on August 6, he has a 1.91 ERA over 37 2/3 innings (six starts) with 47 strikeouts and six walks.

Eovaldi hasn’t had much success against the Mariners in the past. Over five career starts against them, he has a 5.00 ERA over 27 innings with 15 earned runs given up and only 19 strikeouts. In late April, the Mariners tagged Eovaldi for five earned runs in five innings.

Nasty Nate will be going up against Tyler Anderson, whom the Mariners acquired from the Pirates at the deadline after a Phillies trade fell through.

Anderson has a 4.20 ERA over 148 innings this season, with 120 strikeouts. He’s gotten moderately rocked lately, giving up three or more runs in each of his last three starts. The thing that made Anderson such an attractive trade target in July remains true now: he has gone five or more innings in all but one of his 26 starts this season. Last week, he went 4 2/3 innings against Houston.

The Sox have never faced Anderson before; he’s spent his entire career up to the second half this season in the NL, first with the Rockies, then Giants, and most recently, Pirates. He’ll either no-hit them or they’ll light him up.
