MINNEAPOLIS -- The Indians activated Gold Glove catcher Roberto Perez from the injured list before Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Twins at Target Field.
Veteran catcher Ryan Lavarnway was designated for assignment to make room for Perez. The Indians also recalled right-hander J.C. Mejia as their 29th man for the seven-inning doubleheader.
Perez was placed on the IL on Aug. 4 with a sore right shoulder and back. He has not played a game for the Indians since Aug. 3. It was his second trip to the IL this year causing Perez to appear in just 34 games this season. In his first trip to the IL, Perez was sidelined from May 4 through July 2 following surgery on the ring finger of his right hand.
In 34 games he’s hitting .136 (15-for-110) with six homers and 15 RBI. The Indians hold a $7 million club option on Perez for 2022.
Lavarnway appeared in nine games with the Indians this season. He hit .250 (7-for-28). He spent most of the season at Class AAA Columbus, where he hit .278 (42-for-151) with 13 homers and 39 RBI.
Mejia made his big-league debut with the Indians this year, going 1-7 with a 8.75 ERA. He appeared in 14 games, including 11 starts. He is 0-3 with a 7.43 ERA in eight games, including six starts, at Columbus.
