Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum poured his heart and soul into the club for years. But, his tenure at Anfield came to a sad ending in the summer as the Dutchman joined PSG on a free transfer.

Wijnaldum recently spoke on his exit from the Premier League club and revealed the number one reason he didn't end up staying. Via French outlet, L'Equipe:

“You follow your feeling,” the 30-year-old said. “Several months ago, I had expressed the desire to stay in Liverpool but, without going into details, Liverpool did not give me the feeling of wanting to keep me.

“In these cases, we have to move forward.”

He joined Liverpool in 2016 from Newcastle on a €23 million deal and went on to be an integral piece of Jurgen Klopp's squad in the middle of the pitch, helping the Reds win the Champions League and their first Premier League title in 30 years.

As Wijnaldum said, he really wanted to stay at the Merseyside club. It's frankly disappointing they didn't even offer him an extension considering how important he was to their success. Ultimately, the Netherlands international is now playing in a star-studded PSG team alongside the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Lionel Messi.

After leaving Liverpool, he was on the verge of joining Barcelona, but negotiations fell through and the French side swooped in and snatched the talented midfielder up. While Gini Wijnaldum hasn't yet scored for Paris, he's played all five games for Mauricio Pochettino thus far and will be a key component as they look to win Europe's most prized competition this season.

It's definitely a shame he couldn't stay at Liverpool, but they ultimately failed to show enough interest in keeping him.
