Washington Nationals’ Victor Robles in Rochester dilemma...

WASHINGTON - In previous years, this would be the time of the season that the Major League rosters would expand with call-ups from Triple-A and the rest of the minors.

But with rosters reduced in the majors to 28 from previous Septembers, and the Triple-A season lasting until early October, players with big-league experience might not be summoned to the Nationals this month.

That includes center fielder Victor Robles, who was sent to Triple-A Rochester on August 31 by the Nationals.

He was 2-for-4 on Sunday and hit a homer - his third with the Red Wings - in the game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In his first 11 games with Rochester, Robles, 24, was hitting .267 with the three homers and eight RBIs with an OPS of .878. Rochester ends its season on October 3 at home.

Dave Martinez hinted that Robles could be back in Washington.

“I really think his future still here is bright,” Martinez said when Robles was sent down to Rochester in late August. “We want him back here. If he’s playing center field the way he’s capable of playing, we’re gonna do good things. It’s an opportunity for him to go down there, not worry about numbers, per se. ... He gets to go down there and relax and not worry about a whole lot.”

Martinez addressed the subject again on Monday.

“He’s working really hard on doing the things we asked him to do. We’ll keep an eye on him as well, but we’ll see. I’d like to get him back here, as well ... but we’ll see how it goes,” Martinez said of Robles, the center fielder for the Nationals during the World Series run in 2019.

Robles has also played one game this season for Double-A Harrisburg. He broke into the majors in 2017 and in 2019 he played in 155 games and hit 17 homers.

Last year he slumped to .220 and this year he is batting .203 with the Nationals.

Rochester was 44-66 going into a home game on Tuesday with Buffalo.
