Seattle Mariners to host 2023 MLB All-Star Game

Seattle has been chosen to host the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, according to a baseball official with of knowledge the plans.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale on the condition of anonymity because the league and team had not yet announced the plans. Seattle last hosted the All-Star Game in 2001. The city also hosted the 1979 game, played at the Kingdome.

The American League won the 2001 game 4-1 over the National League and in his last appearance at the midsummer classic, Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. was named the game's Most Valuable Player after hitting a third inning home run.

The game is set for T-Mobile Park, a retractable-roof stadium that currently seats 48,000. It was known as Safeco Field in the 2001 game. Next year's game will be at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Smoke from wildfires fills the air at T-Mobile Park in Seattle before a Sept. 14 doubleheader between the Mariners and A's.

The 2021 All-Star Game was moved from Atlanta to Denver as a result of the state of Georgia adopting new voting laws, which many have said were restrictive to people of color.
