DeSantis threatens heavy fines for COVID-19 vaccination requirement

Gov. Ron DeSantis is continuing his threats on fines for COVID-19 vaccination requirements, he announced in a news conference on Monday, Sept. 13. 

DeSantis imposed a bold threat against the cities and counties of Florida, stating that any city or county that requires COVID-19 vaccination of employees will face a $5,000 fine per infraction.

"We are gonna stand for the men and women who are serving us. We are gonna protect Florida jobs," DeSantis said. "We are not gonna let people be fired because of a vaccine mandate."

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings had previously announced a mandate that all Orange County employees must be partially vaccinated by Sept. 30 and fully by Oct. 31.

Local governments could face millions of dollars in fines. 

DeSantis’ administration has already been battling school mask mandates. Late last week, a Florida appeals court late allowed the state to continue implementing an order banning mask requirements in schools while the issue is under review.

The fines will start Sept. 16 if people are asked to show proof of a vaccine.
