The bad news is the Padres aren't alone 1/2 game back of Cincinnati. The St. Louis Cardinals also are within 1/2 game of the Reds after defeating the Mets, 7-0, on Monday night in New York.

San Diego Padres catcher Victor Caratini (17) watches as San Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria (10) celebrates with right fielder LaMonte Wade Jr. (31) and shortstop Brandon Crawford (35) after hitting a three-run home run against the San Diego Padres in the first inning at at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sept. 13.

The Reds have 18 games remaining in the 2021 Major League Baseball season. The Cardinals and Padres each have 19 games left.

The Reds are 75-69. The Padres are 74-69. The Cardinals are 74-69.

The Reds were off Monday before starting a three-game series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The Padres play three more games against the Giants. The Cardinals play two more against the Mets.

The Philadelphia Phillies, also idle Monday, trail the Reds by 2 1/2 games. The Mets trail Cincinnati by 3 1/2 games.
