Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has opened up about his future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the run-up to the release of Eternals.

The actor, who famously played Jon Snow in the hit fantasy show, is set to be introduced as comic book character Dane Whitman aka Black Knight in the eagerly anticipated superhero movie.

By now, fans are all too aware that when actors sign up to the franchise, it's usually for more than one outing. At the moment, Harington claims he's "got no idea" whether Dane will be seen in follow-ups later down the line – he's "hopeful" that he will, though.

"He's not an Eternal. He works with the Natural History Museum in London. But he's not an Eternal – that's the main takeaway," he told Total Film recently.

"I've got no idea whether my character goes on or not," the 34-year-old continued. "I had read up on who he could be, or might be. So there's the possibility for a longer trajectory.

"I think this is the tip of the iceberg for my character. But I just don't know, you know? I'm as in the dark as anyone else. And I try not to live too far ahead in the future with anything. Even when I was in Game of Thrones, even on the sixth season, I presumed the seventh season wasn't going to happen!"

Directed by Nomadland's Chloé Zhao, Eternals centres on an advanced, immortal alien race that has lived on Earth in secret for thousands of years.

Having never interfered with major events before, including the Mad Titan's initial Snap, unless their evil counterparts – the Deviants – were involved, the group are forced to re-evaluate their passive position and come together to protect humanity from a formidable enemy, the Celestials, and a seemingly global disaster, too.

In it, Harington shares the screen with his former co-star Richard Madden, who plays Ikaris, and Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan, as Sersi.

The Walking Dead's Lauren Ridloff (as speedster Makkari), The Big Sick's Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Dunkirk's Barry Keoghan (Druig), Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak) and Angelina Jolie (Thena) round out the cast.

Eternals will be released in the US and the UK on November 5, 2021.
