How to Turn on Your TV With Google Home

Learn how to turn your TV on and off with a voice command

What To Know

  • Easiest: Download the Google Home App from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
  • You will need a Google Chromecast in order to control your TV with a Google Home device.
  • Alternative Method: Chromecast itself will recognize voice commands through the Google Home App without a Google Home device.

This article explains how to turn your TV on using Google Home and the Google Chromecast streaming device.

These instructions apply to phones running Android 5.1 and higher or Apple iOS 14.

Can I Turn on My TV With Google Home?

You can turn on your TV with Google Home by using Google Chromecast. You will need two things to do this, a TV with CEC support and a Google Chromecast dongle. The CEC or Consumer Electronics Control, in short, allows your TV to be powered on through HDMI devices such as a streaming player.

Can Google Home Mini Control My TV?

  1. Google Home can control the power settings on your TV, but you’ll first have to connect Google Home to your Chromecast to proceed.

  2. Connect the Google Chromecast to your TV.

  3. Install the Google Home app on your smartphone via Google Play or the Apple App Store.

  4. Open the Google Home app and it will automatically search for nearby devices.

  5. You will then be prompted on screen to choose a device to setup.

  6. Once you have chosen your device you will login to your Google account and the Chromecast will now be synced with the Google Home device.

You’ll want to do a test run and say either “OK, Google, turn on my TV" or, "OK, Google, power on the TV." The iOS method is going to be identical, as the Google Home App is unchanged for the Apple smartphone and tablet devices.

Once the TV is on, you can use Google Home to control the Chromecast with your voice. Give it different commands, such as raising and lowering the volume or opening a specific streaming app you want to watch.

Your Chromecast and Google Home App will need to be on the same Wi-Fi network in order to properly work together. If you have multiple Chromecasts under the same roof, you’ll want to set one as the default TV.

Why Won't My Google Home Turn on My TV?

A Chromecast or Google Home itself cannot control the power settings on your TV without CEC. You need to go into the settings menu and enable this option before you will be able to use Google Home to turn your TV off.

CEC isn’t always referred to as the same thing depending on the TV brand, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for its other industry-recognized names as well.
