The Eagles have opened up another $11.1 million in cap space for the 2021 season by re-doing defensive tackle Fletcher Cox’s current contract, according to an ESPN report.
Howie Roseman and the Eagles opened up the space by converting $13.9 million of Cox’s $15 million base salary into a signing bonus. As a result, the team now has around $20 million in salary cap space.
It is unclear how this will impact the Eagles’ cap space in the future, but it is likely going to decrease their available space by a few million dollars. Chances are the team added dummy years to the end of Cox’s contract. This also likely means Cox will be back for the 2022 season.
The timing of the decision to open the cap space up is interesting. The Eagles now have plenty fo room to add any player they want, whether it be via a free agent or a trade. The nearly $20 million in cap space they have will roll over into the 2022 season, so there is no urgency to spend it.
As of now, without the details of Cox’s new deal, the Eagles should have around $29 million in cap space for the 2022 offseason, including the rolled over money from this season.
