Toyota Launches 2022 Corolla Cross In Japan With Different Styling And Hybrid AWD Option

Following the recent leaks, Toyota officially revealed the Japanese-spec Corolla Cross featuring some styling differences from the global- and US-spec models. The latest TNGA-based based SUV slots between the slightly smaller C-HR and the quite larger RAV4.

The range offers the choice between petrol and hybrid powertrain options, while the latter is also available with Toyota’s E-four electric all-wheel-drive system.

The biggest change compared to the US-spec Corolla Cross is the redesigned front bumper and the new LED headlight graphics. The Japanese model has a small protruding grille but a significantly larger central intake underneath surrounded by a decorative frame.

Higher grades are equipped with full LED headlights featuring dynamic turn signals above the main beam. The profile looks identical while at the rear again we have slightly different taillight graphics and a sportier design for the rear bumper’s plastic cladding.

Inside there is a familiar 7-inch digital instrument cluster combined with a high-mounted infotainment touchscreen measuring up to 8-inches with Android Auto / Apple CarPlay compatibility.

There is also an optional Panorama Roof shedding plenty of light in the five-seater cabin. Toyota claims that the Corolla Cross offers the biggest luggage capacity in its class with 487 liters and an optional Luggage Active Box.

The Japanese-spec Corolla Cross is available with a slightly reworked version of the naturally aspirated 1.8-liter four-cylinder 2ZR-FAE engine producing 138 hp (103 kW / 140 PS) and 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque, sent to the front wheels via the “Super CVT-i” transmission.

The new JDM-spec Toyota Corolla Cross is also available with the Toyota Hybrid System II, combining a 1.8-liter engine with one or two electric motors for a system output of 121 hp (90 kW / 122 PS). In this case, power is transmitted to either the front wheels through an E-CVT gearbox or all four wheels with the optional E-Four electric 4WD system. The 2WD variants get torsion beams while the E-Four comes with a double-wishbone rear suspension (MacPherson struts at the front).

Last but not least, the hybrid versions also feature an Emergency Power Supply Mode. This means the battery can power electrical appliances during blackouts, through the accessory power outlet (AC100V/1,500W) while the car is parked.

Toyota’s new Corolla Sport will be priced from 1,999,000 Japanese yen ($18,163) for the base-spec petrol, all the way up to 3,199,000 Japanese yen ($29,067) for the flagship Hybrid E-Four. The model will be produced in Takaoka Plant in Japan, with Toyota targeting 4,400 units on a monthly basis in its home market.
