Rivian’s First Waypoint Charging Stations Have Popped Out Around Moab

Rivian‘s R1T electric truck and R1S electric SUV are some of the most promising entries into the electric vehicle market at the moment. Following the news that the first models are finally ready for delivery, things are only getting better, as the long-awaited waypoint charging stations along off-road trails have begun to pop up around Moab.

The chargers were first spotted by a member of Rivian Forums, who noticed the presumably solar-powered chargers at Under Canvas, a campsite that’s just north of the popular off-road trails in Moab, Utah.

The station supports Level 2 charging, which is the same 11.5kW charge rate as a Rivian owner would get from their own wall charger at home. That, unfortunately, means they don’t get to take advantage of Rivian’s range-topping 200kW+ charging tech, which can replenish 140 miles (225 km) of range in 20 minutes compared to Level 2’s 16 miles (26 km) per hour. But seeing as the R1S and R1T will deliver EPA-estimated ranges of 314 and 316 miles respectively (305 / 308 km) with their 135-kWh battery pack, owners should have no trouble getting by with an overnight charge from one of the Level 2 chargers.

On the plus side, though, these chargers utilize the industry-standard J1772 plug, meaning just about any EV can use them. And in addition to the ones at the campsite, Rivian also plans on installing over 10,000 more Level 2 chargers in the United States and Canada by 2023, as well as over 3,500 of the 200kW+ DC fast chargers by that same time.
