EXCLUSIVE: Here’s an arresting first clip from Senegalese supernatural thriller Saloum, which will get its world premiere in TIFF’s Midnight Madness strand.
Written and directed by Congolese filmmaker Jean Luc Herbulot (Netflix’s Dealer), the kinetic genre-shifting feature follows a legendary trio of on-the-run mercenaries carrying a stolen gold bounty and a kidnapped drug lord who take refuge in a remote and mystical part of Senegal, where dark ancestral forces unleash hell on them all.
Elle Driver handles sales. Cast includes Yann Gael, Evelyne Ily Juhen, Roger Sallah and Mentor Ba.
The film marks the producing debut of African filmmaker/entrepreneur Pamela Diop. It also marks the first film for Herbulot and Diop’s pan-African production company Lacme Studios. The film and TV firm, based in Dakar, has more than ten films in development, and it is in post-production on a second feature film, the American-Senegalese action thriller Zero, shot in the heart of Dakar city.
