Jeep’s ground-breaking 2021 Wrangler 4xe is winning high praise from Wards Auto. The hybrid electric vehicle was named to Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems list. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe manages to incorporate the plug-in hybrid powertrain and still deliver all of the off-road capability that the traditional Jeep Wrangler is known for.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Hybrid System

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe combines a 2.0-liter I-4 engine with two electric motors. The Wrangler 4xe gets an estimate 21 miles of pure electric range. What is especially interesting is the Jeep 4xe’s ability to either run on pure gasoline or as a hybrid. Drivers also have the option to eSave, or save the electric portion to use while off-roading. Jeep has found that many of the Wrangler 4xe owners drive out to the trail on gasoline and then off-road using the electricity. Owners tell Jeep that they love the instantaneous torque that the electric mode delivers. EPA has rated the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe at 49 miles per gallon-equivalent (MPGe).

“This is advanced, environmentally friendly technology that seamlessly fits into anyone’s daily life,” said Micky Bly, Stellantis Head of Propulsion Systems. “Then you take the Jeep Wrangler 4xe off road and it hits you that electrified propulsion and nearly silent running are unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. You won’t want to come off the trails.”

“Delivering a powertrain that manages torque from three sources and loses nothing from the Jeep Wrangler’s legendary capability is a challenge. We are energized by the response from our customers as well as the recognition from the Wards editors. We’re not finished, there is more to come,” Bly said.

Designing and engineering the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe was especially complicated because the hybrid has to be able to operate in both 4-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive low, while rock crawling. Jeep Wrangler 4xe was the No. 1 selling PHEV in the United States in the second quarter of 2021. Jeep is planning to use the 4xe system on several other models.

Wards Auto Says the 4xe Compromises Nothing

“The all-new 400-volt plug-in hybrid system makes the Jeep Wrangler 4xe a whole lot more efficient and it compromises nothing on the trail, in its rugged, off-road element,” said Tom Murphy, WardsAuto Managing Editor. “And on the highway, you need to really pay attention to notice when the 4-cylinder turbo shuts down and you’re sailing along in battery-electric mode. The Jeep Wrangler has always been about crossing difficult terrain to enjoy the great outdoors. With the Wrangler 4xe, Jeep loyalists can feel good about helping preserve the great outdoors as well.”

“The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a clear example that you can have the best of both worlds: legendary Jeep capability combined with an electrified, ecofriendly package that allows you to enjoy nature in almost absolute silence,” said Christian Meunier, Jeep Brand Chief Executive Officer. “The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is already a success around the globe and shortly after launch, it became the number one selling PHEV in America, showcasing that 4xe is the new 4x4.”

Stellantis has committed to investing more than $35 billion through 2025 in electrification and software. During a day-long presentation devoted to future electrification, Stellantis said all 14 brands will offer best-in-class fully electrified solutions. An electric Ram ProMaster is planned for 2023 and an electric Ram 1500 is planned for 2024.
