Hearing for Vt. Supreme Court justice nominated to federal appeals court
WASHINGTON (WCAX) - A historic confirmation hearing on Tuesday for a Vermont Supreme Court justice. Beth Robinson was nominated to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals by President Biden.
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is considering her nomination.
Robinson is the first openly gay Vermont Supreme Court justice and if confirmed by the U.S. Senate, she would be the first LGBTQ woman to serve on any federal circuit court.
Before her appointment to the Supreme Court, Robinson helped argue the case that led to Vermont’s 2000 first-in-the-nation civil unions law.
Despite her advocacy work, she told the committee she’s proven to be an objective jurist.
“I’m quite sure that no one person in this room will agree with every position I’ve taken and every opinion I have written. But I hope that a thorough review of my record would support my own belief that I try in every case to be evenhanded with fidelity to the law and I try to bring rigorous legal analysis to the cases before me,” Robinson said.
Justice Robinson was introduced at the judiciary hearing by Vermont Sens. Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy, who sits on the committee.
