NK cells induce a pro-inflammatory phenotype in RA synovial fibroblasts

Cover picture for the articleIn rheumatoid arthritis (RA), distinct pro-inflammatory cell subsets are thought to be mediators of pathogenesis. One such subset consists of synovial fibroblasts that are characterized by expression of CD90 (also known as Thy-1) and HLA-DR. The results of a study of this cell population, which is greatly expanded in active RA, suggest that these pro-inflammatory, IL-6-secreting cells are activated by IFNγ derived from synovial natural killer (NK) cells.
