NFL free agent quarterback Cam Newton has been linked with the Washington Football Team after the club's starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick sustained a hip injury during Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Apparently, however, the team has no plans to look at Newton as of now even though Fitzpatrick has to be sidelined for a significant amount of time, per Pro Football Talk. Of course it seems Washington is not closing the door on possibly reuniting Cam with his former coach and now WFT head tactician Ron Rivera.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Washington Football Team isn’t there yet with Newton. If Fitzpatrick is out, Taylor Heinecke becomes the starter and Kyle Allen becomes the backup.

If the injury bug continues to bite, things could change. One big factor, as previously mentioned, would be the status of the relationship between Newton and coaches who currently are with Washington and who previously were with Carolina, when Newton was there.

For what it's worth, it has also been reported earlier that the Washington Football Team will “look internally” first before seeking outside help for their quarterback position. The team is reportedly confident that both Taylor Heinecke and Kyle Allen are enough to fill in amid the possible lengthy absence of Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick had an MRI Monday, revealing that he suffered from a hip subluxation. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the veteran QB will be placed on the Injured Reserve list though there's no indication that his season is over.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Cam Newton after the New England Patriots released him. However, there's no doubt he's staying ready whenever he gets a call.
