Chance the Rapper’s relationship with Ralph Lauren runs deep. For his third mixtape, Coloring Book, the musician wore an RRL T-shirt on the cover. He’s attended many of the brand’s fashion shows, helped design a Bitmoji collection, held several concerts at RL stores, and even got married in tux by the label.

So it should really come as no surprise that Chance—and his wife, Kirsten Corley—attended his first Met Gala in a fit by the label (along with the Hublot Classic Fusion King Gold Pavé watch). Not only that, but the double-breasted jacket and slim-fit trousers were a clear reference to one of Ralph Lauren’s most celebrated designs. “It’s obviously inspired by the Stadium collection from the ’90s,” he told E! of the outfit, which he put together with stylist Law Roach. “It had a little hip-hop feel, a little Chicago feel.”

In 1992, Ralph Lauren introduced the Stadium line, which was inspired by vintage images of track-and-field athletes and celebrated that year’s U.S. Olympic team. It featured an array of vibrant fits with sports symbols and graphics, and was adopted by street culture almost immediately. Images like the P-wing logo have become iconic in their own right. And because the night's theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” wearing a suit that nods to that particular collection from the label—which was founded by the eponymous Bronx-born designer who effectively created the idea of the lifestyle brand—definitely kept to the theme.

“I expect to have a good time,” Chance told the reporter. “I expect to see some high-end, high-level fashion.” Clearly, the man followed suit.
